REMOVAL SERVICE POINTS

<<A>> RETAINER LOCK REMOVAL

Use the following special tools to compress the valve spring. Remove the retainer lock.

  • Valve spring compressor (MD998735)
  • Retainer holder D (MB992283)
note Store removed parts such as valves and springs with tags describing cylinder No. and installed position for reassembly.

<<B>> VALVE STEM SEAL REMOVAL

Use Special Tool Valve Stem Seal Pliers (MB992085) to firmly pinch the valve stem seal and twist it right and left for pulling out.

INSTALLATION SERVICE POINTS

>>A<< VALVE STEM SEAL INSTALLATION

caution
  • The valve stem seal must not be reused.
  • Be sure to use a special tool to install the valve stem seal. Poor installation causes oil loss.
  • If oil is not applied, the valve stem seal may rise to the surface after it is press fitted.
1.Apply a small amount of engine oil to the valve stem seal.

2.Use the valve stem as a guide and use Special Tool Valve Stem Seal Installer. Press fit the valve stem seal into the valve guide.
Inlet side:
    Valve stem seal installer (MB992284)
Exhaust side:
    Valve stem seal installer (MD998775)

>>B<< VALVE SPRING INSTALLATION

Install the valve spring so that the painted side faces toward the camshaft.
note Only the inlet valve spring has the painted side.
note The exhaust valve spring does not discriminate between the upward direction and the downward direction.

>>C<< RETAINER LOCK INSTALLATION

Use special tools to compress the valve spring and to install the retainer lock.

  • Valve spring compressor (MD998735)
  • Retainer holder D (MB992283)

>>D<< CYLINDER HEAD GASKET / CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION

1.If the cylinder gasket is only replaced, check the notch shown in the illustration to select the gasket that is the same in size.

2.If either one of the cylinder block, piston, connecting rod and crankshaft is replaced, select again the gasket according to the following procedures:
(1) Keeping each piston at top dead centre, measure the amount of projection from the block top at the 8 places shown in the illustration. Always measure it on the centre line of the crankshaft.
(2) Use the average of the 8 measurements to select the gasket size (A, B or C) according to the table shown below. If either one of the measurements at 8 places exceeds the specified maximum projection, use the gasket that is one size larger.
Type by size
Average piston projection mm
Maximum piston projection mm
Tightened thickness mm
A (1 notch)
0.495 - 0.549
0.599
1.26 - 1.34
B (2 notch)
0.549 - 0.603
0.653
1.31 - 1.39
C (3 notch)
0.603 - 0.658
-
1.36 - 1.44
note If the projection amount of piston exceeds the allowable value, replace the piston, connecting rod, crankshaft or cylinder block to check it again.

3.Completely remove the liquid gasket on the upper plane of the cylinder block and the lower plane of the cylinder head to remove grease.
4.
caution The application location of the liquid gasket must not deviate. If it deviates, the oil can possibly leak because the sealability is not maintained.
Apply the liquid gasket (Φ2 - 3 mm) to the upper plane of the cylinder block, as shown in the illustration.
Specified sealant:
    Three bond 1217G or equivalent
5.Install the cylinder head gasket.
note Check that the centre of the liquid gasket is located toward the cylinder gasket in the position specified in the illustration.
6.Apply the liquid gasket (Φ2 - 3 mm) to the upper plane of the cylinder head gasket, as shown in the illustration.
Specified sealant:
    Three bond 1217G or equivalent
7.Install the cylinder head assembly.

>>E<< CYLINDER HEAD BOLT INSTALLATION

1.Install new cylinder head bolts in the following procedures.
note The cylinder head bolts must not be reused.
2.Apply an appropriate amount of engine oil to top and bottom surfaces of washers and threaded portion of bolts.
3.Install cylinder head bolts to the cylinder head.

4.Tighten cylinder head bolts in several steps to the specified torque of 50 ± 2 N·m according to the assembly order.

5.Put a paint mark on all of cylinder head bolt heads and cylinder heads.
6.Tighten the cylinder head 90° according to the tightening order.
7.Tighten a further 90°.
8.Completely loosen the cylinder head bolts.

9.Tighten again cylinder head bolts in several steps to the specified torque of 50 ± 2 N·m according to the assembly order.

10.
caution
  • When the tightening angle is smaller than the specified tightening angle, the appropriate tightening capacity cannot be secured.
  • When the tightening angle is larger than the specified tightening angle, remove the bolt to start from the beginning again according to the procedure.
Tighten the cylinder head 90° according to the tightening order.
11.Tighten a further 90°.
12.Tighten it further 90°and make sure that the paint mark on the cylinder head bolt is in the same straight line with the paint mark on the cylinder head.
