INSPECTION PROCEDURE A-3: The Tailgate does not Open.

caution

Before replacing the ECU, ensure that the input and output signal circuits are normal.

OPERATION

The ETACS-ECU operates this function in accordance with the input signals below.

Vehicle speed signal (ABS-ECU <Vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU <Vehicles with ASC>)
Tailgate lock release handle
Tailgate lock actuator

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

If this function does not work normally, a malfunction of the input signal circuit(s) mentioned above or ETACS-ECU is suspected.

PROBABLE CAUSES

Vehicle speed signal (ABS-ECU <Vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU <Vehicles with ASC>) error
Malfunction of the tailgate lock release handle
Malfunction of the tailgate lock actuator
Malfunction of ETACS-ECU
Damaged wiring harness and connectors

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

STEP 1. Checking central door unlocking operation

Check that the central door locking system works normally.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 2.

Refer to inspection procedure A-1 "Central door locking system does not work at all

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics

Use M.U.T.-III to diagnose the CAN bus lines.

Q. Is the CAN bus normal?

Go to Step 3.

Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to GROUP 54C - Troubleshooting

STEP 3. Check the M.U.T.-III Diagnosis code of other systems

Check that the ABS-ECU <Vehicles without ASC> or the ASC-ECU <Vehicles with ASC> sets a diagnosis code.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Diagnose ABS-ECU <Vehicles without ASC> (Refer to GROUP 35B - Troubleshooting

) or diagnose ASC-ECU <Vehicles with ASC> (Refer to GROUP 35C - Troubleshooting

Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the ETACS-ECU signals related to the tailgate.

Tailgate lock release handle: from OFF to ON

OK: Normal condition is displayed.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.

Refer to inspection procedure B-1 "The tailgate lock release handle signal is not received

STEP 5. Connector check: C-311 ETACS-ECU connector, F-13 Tailgate lock actuator connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.

Repair the defective connector.

STEP 6. Tailgate lock actuator check

Check that the tailgate lock actuator is in good condition. Refer to

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 7.

Replace the tailgate lock actuator.

STEP 7. Resistance measurement at F-13 tailgate lock actuator connector

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.

(2)Measure the resistance between the F-13 tailgate lock actuator connector terminal No. 2 and the body earth.
OK: Continuity (less than 2Ω)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9.

Go to Step 8.

STEP 8. Check of the wiring harness between the F-13 tailgate lock actuator connector terminal No. 2 and the body earth

Check the earth wires for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 9. Check of the wiring harness between the C-311 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 1 and the F-13 tailgate lock actuator connector terminal No. 1

Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check the D-12 intermediate connector, and repair if necessary.

Check the input/output line for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 10. Retest the system.

Check that the tailgate opens normally.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction

Replace ETACS-ECU.
